Self-care is a very important thing we should all practice. Whether it’s something you incorporate daily or weekly, we should all have go-to methods to make ourselves feel relaxed and happy.
Declutter your living space
I love a good declutter. I am constantly throwing things into my ‘charity shop bag’ to donate. It’s so good to freshen up your living space and get rid of things you no longer need. Past experience has taught me that I can only function in a clean environment. Living in student accommodation for three years tested that particular theory, but now that I have my own place, I have made it into my own little sanctuary.
Declutter isn’t the only thing you can do to your home. A good, deep clean always improves my mood. There is nothing better than popping your headphones in and freshening up your space. Whether that’s changing your bed sheets or giving the floor a good mop, it’s incredibly relaxing to have a fresh environment to chill out in.
Drink a glass of water
We should all be drinking our water anyway but, if I’m feeling a little spacey, a glass of water really helps improve my mood. I suffer from migraines so am constantly downing it, otherwise, I get very foggy. If you are feeling a little anxious or stressed, a cool glass of water will really perk you up. It’s one of the best forms of self-care in my opinion!
During my workday, I keep a bottle of water with me so I can constantly keep myself hydrated. Not only is it beneficial for your brain, but it is also good for your skin. A win-win really. Amazon has some amazing bottles and I am currently eyeing one up that is marked by each hour, giving you drinking goals to hit during the day.
Have a bubble bath or hot shower
I’m confident that this one is on most people’s self-care lists. Nothing screams self-care more than sinking into a hot bubble bath or stepping into a peaceful shower. I love the way my muscles relax at the end of a long day once the hot water hits them. Having recently just moved into a new place with a bath (first time in five years!), I feel spoilt for choice as to whether have a shower or bath in the evenings.
Lush has so many incredible products for your shower or bath. I love their bath bombs and would recommend them to anyone looking to spice their bath up! While I haven’t yet used their shower products, I am excited to have a browse once the shops open up again.
Take a peaceful walk outside
What with the warm weather making a return, I will be taking a lot more walks out and about. I love getting a bit of fresh air as it really clears my head and gives me some time away from social media. Last summer my boyfriend and I actually rented bikes for a few hours which was such a fun activity.
Outdoor time is so beneficial to our mental health. I am super lucky to have worked during the lockdown, so I was able to get out of the house. I think we really take it for granted and, although you might have to drag yourself out, it will definitely improve your mood.
Spend some time in the kitchen
I’ve really started to enjoy cooking over the past year. I love to discover new recipes and practice cooking up exciting dinners. Pinterest is a great place to find and save new recipes you want to try. What with my new kitchen, I am also looking forwards to start baking again, something I haven’t done in years!
While it might seem like work, once you get going, cooking or baking can be so relaxing. You are so focused on creating something delicious, you immediately forget whatever it is you are stressing about. I mostly like to cook in peace but there’s nothing wrong with putting an episode of your favourite show on it the background too!
Take a power nap
If you really aren’t feeling up to any of the above, a power nap is a great way to feel fresh and more relaxed. Even if you just settle down in bed and close your eyes, enjoy the feeling of doing absolutely nothing! It is a great way to get in some meditation time too. You can transport yourself somewhere else, focus on your breathing, and just take it easy.
If you don’t like the complete and utter silence, listening to an audiobook is a great way to be somewhere else for a while and delve into a new and exciting world!
